Joan had a variety of jobs, including working for the BBC, the United Nations Information Centre and then as features editor for a short story magazine. Her first children's novel, The Kingdom and the Cave, was published in 1960. Joan Aiken wrote over a hundred books for young readers and adults and is recognized as one of the classic authors of the twentieth century. Her best-known books are those in the James III saga, of which The Wolves of Willoughby Chase was the first title, published in l962 and awarded the Lewis Carroll prize. Both that and Black Hearts in Battersea have been filmed. Her books are internationally acclaimed and she received the Edgar Allan Poe Award in the United States as well as the Guardian Award for Fiction in this country for The Whispering Mountain. Quentin Blake (Illustrator) 
Quentin Blake has illustrated more than three hundred books and was Roald Dahl's favourite illustrator. In 1980 he won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal. In 1999 he became the first ever Children's Laureate and in 2013 he was knighted for services to illustration.

After creating his first book at the age of eight, Jan went on to excel in his chosen field of design, working in such diverse areas as television, theatre and greetings cards. Published in 1968, A Necklace of Raindrops was the first of several wonderful collaborations between Jan and Joan Aiken - and it was also the very first book Jan illustrated. He has since twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration, and has created many instantly recognizable classics.

Mansfield Revisited

Joan Aiken picks up the pen of her forerunner, Jane Austen, in this charming sequel to Mansfield Park.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Joan Aiken gives the story a fresh twist with a plausible explanation for Henry Crawford’s supposed perfidy in Mansfield Park which allows him to become a possible suitor for Susan. And the introduction of several lively new characters ensures that Mansfield Revisited is a stand-alone story. Aiken also captures Jane Austen’s tone excellently; the language and vocabulary are exactly right, as are the touches of irony and humour.

I finished the book in one day . . . gosh darn it, Mansfield Park Revisited was good . . . Aiken has a canny ability to stay true to the developed Austen characters and seamlessly integrate and expand into leading roles the characters that were tertiary in the original work.

Aiken is by far one of the most talented writers to attempt an Austen sequel and  Mansfield Park Revisited is truly worthy of resurrection. She has  respectfully continued Austen’s story by expanding her characters, adapting the  language for the modern reader, accurately including the social mantle and  believably turning our concerns for the two main antagonists Mary and Henry  Crawford at the end of Mansfield Park into sympathies, which given  their principles and past bad behaviour is quite an accomplishment.

Jane Austen would wholeheartedly have approved of what her colleague Joan Aiken did to her Mansfield Park characters. This reissued sequel is exactly what the doctor ordered for people who loved Fanny Price . . . A book worthy of Miss Austen herself

I thought this book was one of the best adventure stories I have encountered and a touching yet easy to read book. I would love to read the next in the trilogy and I would recommend it to boys and girls age eight and up for an unpredictable adventure.

I can’t say I was ever desperate to know what became of Lady Catherine de Bourgh . . . But, now that I have read Joan Aiken’s sequel, Lady Catherine’s Necklace, I am much more interested in what happened . . . There is a hilarious adventure awaiting Lady Catherine . . . To me, Joan Aiken seems to have captured just the right style, making this book feel almost like the real thing.

Joan Aiken takes a couple of minor characters from that book, Maria and Anne, and brings them to life in a distinct, fully-imagined world. She gives both girls a depth of character and real emotional problems to solve, and we love them for themselves.

Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy have finally found matrimonial bliss, and so our attention must now turn to their acquaintances at Rosings Park, the estate of the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh . . .
