The five shortlisted titles for the BBC National Short Story Award 2013, as heard on BBC Radio 4.

Sarah Hall is the author of four novels including The Carhullan Army, which won the 2006/7 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and was listed as one of The Times' 100 Best Books of the Decade. Her first collection of short stories, The Beautiful Indifference, won the Portico Prize for Fiction 2012. 
 
Lisa Blower is an award-winning short story writer and novelist. She won the Guardian’s National Short Story competition in 2009, and her debut novel Sitting Ducks was longlisted for the Guardian's Not the Booker 2016, The Rubery Award 2016 and The People’s Book Prize 2016. 
 
Lionel Shriver is best known for her internationally bestselling novel We Need To Talk About Kevin, which won the 2005 Orange Prize for Fiction and was adapted as a hit film starring Tilda Swinton. Her other novels include The New Republic, So Much for That, The Post-Birthday World, Big Brother and The Mandibles: A Family, 2029–2047. 
 
Lucy Wood is the author of the acclaimed short story collection Diving Belles. She has been longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize, shortlisted for the Edge Hill Prize and won the Holyer an Gof Award and a Somerset Maugham Award. 
 
Lavinia Greenlaw has published five collections of poetry including Minsk (2003), which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot, Forward and Whitbread Poetry Prizes. Her first novel, Mary George of Allnorthover, was published in 2001 and won the Prix du Premier Roman Etranger. Her second, An Irresponsible Age, appeared in 2006. She has also written two works of non-fiction and published and broadcast several short stories.

BBC International Short Story Award 2012

All ten shortlisted titles for the BBC International Short Story Award 2012.

Lucy Caldwell is the author of three novels and several stage plays and radio dramas. Among her awards are the Commonwealth Writers’ Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize. Her debut collection of short stories, Multitudes, was published in 2016. 
 
Krys Lee is an award-winning author whose works include the short story collection Drifting House and the novel How I Became a North Korean. 
 
Henrietta Rose-Innes is the author of four novels: Nineveh, Green Lion (both shortlisted for South Africa's Sunday Times Fiction Prize), Shark's Egg and The Rock Alphabet. Her short stories have appeared in several international publications, including Granta and AGNI. 
 
M. J. Hyland is the author of three multi-award-winning novels: How the Light Gets In (shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize); Carry Me Down (shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and the Booker Prize, and winner of the Encore Prize and the Hawthornden Prize); and This Is How (longlisted for the Orange Prize and the Dublin International IMPAC Prize). 
 
Deborah Levy's plays include Pax, Clam and Heresies. Miroslav Penkov is a Bulgarian author whose short stories have won several awards, including The Southern Review’s Eudora Welty Prize. His short story collection East of the West was a finalist for the 2012 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing and the Steven Turner Award for First Fiction by the Texas Institute of Letters. His debut novel, Stork Mountain, was published in 2016. 
 
Chris Womersley is an Australian author who has written three novels: Cairo, Bereft (winner of the Indie Award for Best Fiction and the ABIA Award for Fiction) and The Low Road (winner of the Ned Kelly Award). His short fiction has been published in many literary journals including Granta. 
 
Adam Ross is an American author whose work includes the novel Mr Peanut, named one of the best books of 2010 by The New Yorker, while his short story col&shy;lec&shy;tion Ladies and Gen&shy;tle&shy;men was included in Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2011. 
 
Carrie Tiffany's debut novel, Everyman's Rules for Scientific Living, won the Western Australian Premier's Book Award for Fiction. Her second novel, Mateship with Birds, was published in 2012. 
 
Julian Gough is the author of several novels including Jude in Ireland, Jude in London and Juno &amp; Juliet. He has also written a children's picture book, Rabbit's Bad Habits, and a number of BBC radio plays.

Jack The Ripper and the East End

Published to co-incide with a major exhibition at the London Museum at Docklands. 
This fascinating book is about the East End in the late 19th century and how it provided the background for the murders of Jack the Ripper.

In 1888, Whitechapel - at the heart of the inner East End - was the most (in)famous place in the country, widely imagined as a site of the blackest and deepest horror. Its streets and alleys were seen as violent and dangerous, overflowing with poverty and depravity. This book aims to uncover the reality of East End life. Sections look at slum housing, immigration, attitudes to women, poverty, violence and crime. The book examines how the brutal killings were reported and how the police tried to identify the murderer. A final section shows how Jack the Ripper has shaped our vision of London, and influenced our popular culture. 
 
Jack the Ripper and the East End coincides with an exhibition organised by the Museum of London at their Museum in Docklands. Key surviving documents from the National Archives and the London Metropolitan Archives will be on display - in addition to material from the collections of the Museum of London such as photographs of the Whitechapel Mission. The illustrations for the book will include rare and unpublished photographs, sections of the 'master' Booth Map of Poverty, detectives' reports and original letters. 
 
The introduction will be written by Peter Ackroyd, who is the acknowledged expert on London, its darker aspects and how its history has seeped into its very stones. Leading historians and curators will provide additional insights. This is a book which will be valued for years to come for its enduring and important portrait of the Victorian East End.
