Five soundtrack adventures of stories lost from the TV archive

John Lucarotti (Author) 
John Lucarotti was born in England and spent nine years in the Royal Navy during and after the Second World War. He then went to North America to work for Imperial Oil. It was here that he began writing. Later, he scripted an eighteen-part radio series about the life of Marco Polo for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, but at one point found himself earning more money as an encyclopedia salesman than as a writer. Consequently he decided to focus on the US market. By the late Fifties he had taken Canadian citizenship, and then returned to England, where he became involved in TV work. 
 
He had recently moved to Majorca when, at Syndey Newman's suggestion, David Whitaker approached him to write for Doctor Who. Remembering his CBC series, he chose Marco Polo as his subject. Throughout the Sixties and Seventies, Lucarotti continued a successful TV career, creating the shows Operation Patch and The Ravelled Thread, among others, and contributing scripts to The Avengers, Doctor Who, Ghost Squad, Joe 90, The Man in Room 17, Murder Bag, New Scotland Yard, The Protectors, Moonbase 3, The Onedin Line, Star Maidens and Into the Labyrinth, his last credited screen work in 1981. He novelised his 1976 serial Operation Patch (Target, 1976) and the 1979/1980 series The Ravelled Thread (Puffin Books, 1979). He contributed the first Brief Encounter short story for Doctor Who Magazine in 1990, in which the author met the First Doctor in a French bar. The story was reprinted in the 1992 Doctor Who Yearbook (Marvel, 1991). John Lucarotti died in Paris, France, on 20 November 1994 aged 68. 
 
Dennis Spooner (Author) 
Dennis Spooner was script editor of Doctor Who during the William Hartnell era, and wrote several stories for the show, including The Reign of Terror and The Romans. He also wrote for the Gerry Anderson series' Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray and Thunderbirds, and co-created five espionage series' including Man in a Suitcase, Department S and The Adventurer. Spooner also created the cult detective series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). He died in September 1986. 
 
David Whitaker (Author) 
David Whitaker was the first Story Editor for Doctor Who, and was responsible for finding and commissioning writers, and it was Whitaker as much as anyone who defined the narrative shape of Doctor Who. He wrote for the Doctor Who annuals, novelised the first Dalek story and worked with Terry Nation on various Dalek-related material including the hugely successful comic strip The Daleks. David Whitaker died in 1980. 
 
William Emms (Author) 
William Emms was a scriptwriter who wrote for a variety of television programmes including The Revenue Men (1967-68), Callan (1969-70), Ace of Wands (1970), Z Cars (1965-71) and Crossroads (1980). In 1965, he wrote Galaxy 4, the first serial in the third season of Doctor Who. It was broadcast in four weekly parts from 11 September to 2 October. Emms wrote several further scripts for Doctor Who, but they were not commissioned. However, in 1985 his novelisation of Galaxy 4 was published as a Target book, and the following year, he wrote a novel in the Make Your Own Adventure with Doctor Who range of children's gamebooks, entitled Mission to Venus. He died in 1993.

Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison star as the Doctor in these six narrated full-cast TV soundtracks of classic Doctor Who TV serials.

Robert Holmes (1926 – 1986) was a British television scriptwriter, who for over twenty-five years contributed to some of the most popular programmes screened in the UK. He is particularly remembered for his work on science fiction programmes, most notably his extensive contributions to Doctor Who. David Whitaker (1928 - 1980) was an English television writer and novelist known for his work in the early years of the science-fiction TV series Doctor Who. He served as the programme's first story editor, supervising the writing of its first 51 episodes from 1963 to 1964.

Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison star as the Doctor in these narrated full-cast TV soundtracks of classic Doctor Who TV serials. 
 
Each one is enhanced with linking narration by a member of the original cast, including Frazer Hines, Caroline John, Richard Franklin, Louise Jameson, Lalla Ward and Janet Fielding.

Doctor Who: The Crusade (TV Soundtrack)

The Doctor and his companions encounter King Richard the Lionheart in this classic remastered soundtrack adventure with linking narration by William Russell.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME: The Crusade formed part of Doctor Who's second season on television. It was produced at a time when the programme's original formula (alternating science fiction adventures with those set in Earth's history) was still being closely adhered to. Richard the Lionheart's adventures in the Holy Land were deemed to be of sufficient educational merit for the Saturday teatime viewing audience, and so a script was commissioned from David Whitaker. As the show's original story editor, Whitaker was well versed in Doctor Who's format. Although he had stepped down from the post of editor in late 1964, he had recently written the introductory story for Vicki (following Susan's departure in The Dalek Invasion of Earth) and was more than comfortable writing for the Doctor, Ian and Barbara. This was Douglas Camfield's second directing job for Doctor Who. Filming for some scenes took place at the Ealing Film Studios during February 1965, and this was then followed by video recording at the BBC Riverside Studios in West London. The four episodes were recorded on consecutive Fridays in March. Julian Glover would return to Doctor Who as Count Scarlioni in the 1979 serial City of Death, whilst Jean Marsh would make two return visits: in 1965 she played Sara Kingdom in The Daleks' Master Plan, and in 1989 she portrayed the wicked Morgaine in Battlefield. Composer Dudley Simpson here provides his second musical score for the series (the first being the season opener, Planet of Giants). By the end of the decade, he would be an almost permanent fixture on the programme, scoring most episodes until the show's relaunch under John Nathan-Turner in 1980. Along with The Daleks and The Web Planet, this was one of the first Doctor Who television serials to be novelised. As Doctor Who and the Crusaders, by David Whitaker, it was published in hardback by Frederick Muller Ltd in 1965, and then as a Target Books paperback in 1973. The final scene of this story sees the TARDIS travellers caught in a new kind of extreme circumstance. As was the custom at this time, this cliffhanger segued into 'next week's adventure', Episode One of The Space Museum.

'History must take its course...'   The TARDIS materialises in the middle of a holy war between King Richard the Lionheart and the Saracen leader, Saladin, in 12th Century Palestine. As the Doctor, Vicki, Ian and Barbara explore their surroundings, they are suddenly caught up in a Saracen ambush - and Barbara is kidnapped.   For the time travellers, intrigue and espionage ensue as they once again become involved in living history. A newly-knighted 'Sir Ian of Jaffa' makes haste to find and rescue Barbara, whilst the Doctor finds it difficult to stay out of trouble in the court of the King...   This classic adventure, only two episodes of which survive in the BBC film archive, stars William Hartnell as the Doctor, William Russell as Ian, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara, and Maureen O'Brien as Vicki. Amongst the guest cast are Julian Glover as Richard, with Jean Marsh as his sister Joanna.

David Whitaker died in 1980. 
 
Terry Nation started as a comedy writer and performer, and was approached with an offer to work on Doctor Who, providing the seven episodes of the first ever Dalek story. After inventing the Daleks, Nation moved on to work on The Saint, The Champions and The Avengers. In the 1970s he scripted four more Dalek series - including Genesis of the Daleks which has been voted the best ever story in the series. Nation later devised the hugely popular BBC science fiction series Blake's 7. Terry Nation died in Los Angeles in 1996.

He wrote for the Doctor Who annuals, novelised the first Dalek story and his own script of The Crusade, and worked with Terry Nation on various Dalek-related material including the hugely successful comic strip The Daleks, which appeared in the Gerry Anderson magazine TV Century 21. 
 
Whitaker's own scripts for the programme, in particular his two Dalek stories for the second Doctor - The Power of the Daleks and The Evil of the Daleks - are remembered as being amongst the very best of Doctor Who. David Whitaker died in 1980.

Arriving in the Holy Land in the middle of the Third Crusade, the Doctor and his companions run straight into trouble. The Doctor and Vicki befriend Richard the Lionheart, but must survive the cut-throat politics of the English court. Even with the king on their side, they find they have made powerful enemies. 
 
Looking for Barbara, Ian is ambushed - staked out in the sand and daubed with honey so that the ants will eat him. With Ian unable to help, Barbara is captured by the cruel warlord El Akir. Even if Ian escapes and rescues her, will they ever see the Doctor, Vicki and the TARDIS again?

Doctor Who: The Enemy Of The World (TV Soundtrack)

Patrick Troughton plays a dual role in this exclusive soundtrack adventure, with linking narration by Frazer Hines.

THE PROGRAMME: The Enemy of the World was the exception to the rule in Doctor Who's fifth season, an era otherwise characterised by a prevalence of marauding Cybermen, Yeti, Ice Warriors and weed creatures. Whilst the central figure of Salamander can be said to be monstrous in his own way, writer David Whitaker (who had been the programme's original story editor from 1963-1964) provided something of a respite from alien attack with these six episodes. With explosive action scenes, a continent-spanning storyline, glamorous but deadly females and a despotic villain with designs on ruling the planet, The Enemy of the World is in many ways Doctor Who's nod to the James Bond series of films, the latest of which in 1967 was You Only Live Twice. Barry Letts, here undergoing his first directorial assignment for Doctor Who, would later become the series' producer when Peter Bryant (taking over from Innes Lloyd at the end of Enemy...) bowed out. Location filming, primarily of the Australian beach scenes, took place at Littlehampton, West Sussex, in November 1967. Production then moved to Ealing Film Studios, where a split-screen technique was employed to facilitate the Doctor's climactic confrontation with Salamander. Most of the remaining interior scenes for each episode were then rehearsed week by week and videotaped at the BBC's Lime Grove studios. As Salamander, Patrick Troughton was distinguished by both a heavy accent and careful make-up to give him a leaner, more tanned facial appearance. Stock music for the story was taken from recordings of two works by composer Bela Bartok, The Miraculous Mandarin and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste - the latter piece underscoring Salamander's dark, underground secret. The programme enjoyed a healthy degree of Radio Times coverage during the serial's run, including a full-colour cover devoted to it for the 20-26 January issue. Somewhat ironically during the run of a serial featuring no aliens, the caption 'The Monstrous World of Doctor Who' headlined an article about the behind-the-scenes genesis of assorted alien adversaries. A few weeks earlier, a piece entitled 'Who Sets the Fashion?' claimed that the adventure was set 'fifty years ahead' in 2017. The TARDIS crew's plight at the end of this story leads directly into the opening moments of the next, The Web of Fear, also available on BBC Audio.

No sooner have the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria landed on a sun-kissed Australian beach than they are being shot at by murderous fanatics! A dramatic helicopter rescue places them in the hands of Astrid Ferrier and Giles Kent, two people intent on bringing about the downfall of the world’s most dangerous man - who happens to look exactly like the Doctor.   This is Earth in the near future, and Salamander’s Sun-Catcher technology has been hailed as the answer to all the world’s food problems. Yet is there more to his prediction of natural disasters than meets the eye? Could it be that the death and destruction which he appears to foretell is in fact of his own creation?   Jamie and Victoria infiltrate Salamander's Hungarian palace to gain proof of his misdeeds, whilst The Doctor must impersonate the dictator in order to stay alive. In doing so he witnesses the might of his brutish regime, and discovers the terrible secret that lurks beneath the Kanowa research centre.   One of the time travellers' most dangerous adventures ever takes place against a backdrop of volcanos and earthquakes, deadly high-speed chases, assassination attempts and spectacular explosions. Ultimately it will lead them to a climactic confrontation between the Doctor and his murderous double...

The First Doctor becomes the Second in this exclusive recording of Doctor Who’s original regeneration story, starring Patrick Troughton with linking narration by Anneke Wills.

THE PROGRAMME: Before The Power of the Daleks, there had only ever been one Doctor. Played by William Hartnell since the inception of Doctor Who in 1963, he had captivated the imagination of the British viewing public and ensured the success of this Saturday teatime series. However, Hartnell had grown older and less hardy during his three year tenure, and by mutual agreement he resigned the role in 1966. Determined that the show should continue, current producer Innes Lloyd took the view that the Doctor's mysterious nature (his origins are still unknown) meant that anything was possible within reason - including the concept of bodily renewal. Therefore, at the end of the serial The Tenth Planet, the first Doctor was seen to collapse on the floor of the TARDIS in the company of Ben and Polly - before whose eyes his physical appearance shimmered and changed. The following week, The Power of the Daleks picked up and carried on from that very moment. The script, commissioned as 'The Destiny of Doctor Who', was written by David Whitaker - who, having been Doctor Who's original story editor, was deemed a safe pair of hands to shape the future of the programme. The personality of the Second Doctor took some time to perfect, however, and the programme's creator Syndey Newman requested that another ex-story editor, Dennis Spooner, be brought in to rewrite some of the scripts. No location filming was required for The Power of the Daleks and, with the exception of some special effects scenes pre-filmed at Ealing Studios, the serial was recorded at the rate of one episode per week, at the BBC's Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, from October to November 1966. The character of the Second Doctor, as witnessed here, is considerably different to the one which would assert itself towards the end of the programme's fourth season. But whilst Patrick Troughton and his scriptwriters would need time to perfect the new Doctor's personality, the presence of the Daleks ensured that his arrival received much press and audience attention. A rematch between the face-changing traveller and his arch enemies was just around the corner, and David Whitaker was already busy at work on the season finale - which, to all intents and purposes, was going to be the best Dalek story of all...

‘I’ve been renewed...without it I couldn’t survive.’   Before the astonished eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, the Doctor’s whole body has apparently been transformed. Now they are confronted by a stranger who claims to be their old friend – but how can they know whether to trust him?   The TARDIS’s arrival on the swamp planet of Vulcan brings its own problems; the Doctor is mistaken for an official come to solve the Earth colony’s in-fighting, and soon he and his companions are embroiled in political wranglings. However, a far more serious threat lurks within the colony. The scientist Lesterson has discovered a crashed space capsule, within it a group of inert metallic creatures which the Doctor identifies as Daleks. Refusing to heed the Doctor’s warnings, Lesterson supplies power to the Daleks and revives them.   The awakened Daleks claim to be faithful servants of humanity – but could such a thing ever be possible? By covert means they seek an increasing level of energy, but for what?   By the time the Doctor and his friends discover the Daleks’ true plan for the colony, it looks as if it might already be too late to stop them...   Anneke Wills, who plays Polly in the story, narrates this debut story for the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, first broadcast in 1966 and long since missing from the television archives.

Patrick Troughton witnesses ‘the final end’ of the Daleks in this exclusive recording of a classic ‘lost’ BBC television adventure, with linking narration by Frazer Hines.

THE PROGRAMME: The Daleks were created by Terry Nation in 1963, and their popularity cemented the success of the fledgling adventure series Doctor Who. By Christmas 1964 Britain was in the grip of Dalekmania, with children everywhere eager to get their hands on books, games, costumes and models, and merchandisers hardly able to think up new Dalek lines quickly enough. Two feature films were made, based on televised stories and starring Peter Cushing, a stage play was produced in London's West End, and by 1967 the public's thirst for all things Dalek was well on the way to being sated. From the beginning Nation had retained a half share in the copyright on the 'metallic pepperpots', and now his sights were set on new frontiers; it was his ambition to have the Daleks star in their own film series, one in which the Doctor wasn't always on hand to steal their thunder. While his attempts to develop this concept continued, first in Britain and then in America, Nation agreed to David Whitaker scripting two stories for the fourth season of Doctor Who. The second of these was The Evil of the Daleks, which Nation was keen would show 'the final end' for his creations and their home city on Skaro. Whitaker obliged, and the serial was made as if it would feature the Daleks' last appearance in Doctor Who. The opening moments of the story follow directly on from The Faceless Ones, at the close of which the Doctor and Jamie witnessed the TARDIS being driven away on the back of a lorry. With this in mind, the fictional date for the contemporary London scenes must therefore be 20 July 1966. The story's exterior scenes were filmed in London and Harrow Weald, whilst both model and live action special effects scenes were filmed at Ealing Studios, all in April 1967. Studio recording of the episodes then took place at the BBC's Lime Grove facilities during May and June. The Evil of the Daleks also marked the closure of Patrick Troughton's first season as the Doctor. Although further new adventures for the Daleks were some five years away, this story - their black and white swansong, at least - would be the first ever Doctor Who serial to be repeated, in the summer of 1968. For this edition, a voice-over by Patrick Troughton and Wendy Padbury (playing new companion Zoe) would give it the context of a glimpse into the Doctor's past.

'There is only one form of life that matters. Dalek life!'   The TARDIS has been stolen from Gatwick Airport, and the Doctor and Jamie are hot on its trail. A series of cryptic clues lead them to an antiques shop owned by Edward Waterfield, and there it becomes clear that an elaborate trap has been laid for them - but by whom, and for what purpose? Only a journey back in time to the 1860s will reveal the answer...   The Daleks are in search of the Human Factor, something which they believe will help their quest for universal domination. In order to achieve their aim, they need the Doctor’s help and the use of his TARDIS. Worried that his old friend may be turning traitor, Jamie discovers that he too is part of the plan - in the course of which he encounters Victoria Waterfield, a young woman who is to play a large part in his and the Doctor’s life.   The Daleks’ plan has far-reaching consequences, leading to conflict and destruction of astonishing proportions. And when the TARDIS arrives on the battlefield planet of Skaro, the scene is set for an encounter between the Doctor and the malevolent Emperor Dalek...   Frazer Hines, who plays Jamie in the story, narrates this classic story from 1967.
