London's Lost Railways

Packed with surprising and fascinating information, London's Lost Railways uncovers a very different side to London - showing how railway lines shaped our principal city and exploring the legacy they leave today. With individual maps to show each route and over 100 colour photographs, it's essential browsing for any Londoner and the perfect gift for anyone who loves exploring the hidden past...

From the docklands of east London to the grandeur of the Crystal Palace, and from leafy Greenwich Park to the smoke and steam of the inner city, London’s Lost Railways uncovers the hidden railway routes which once criss-crossed our capital, ferrying goods, workers and pleasure-seekers across an ever-expanding metropolis.

Paul Talling reveals how these forgotten railways shaped London, and traces their rise and subsequent fall – from the heydey of Victorian ambition, through to wartime destruction, and post-war change. Armed with his camera, he walks their routes and uncovers their remains, revealing abandoned halts, ghost platforms, repurposed bridges, and curious cuttings and telling tales of bold speculation, fierce competition and a rapidly changing world.

Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Railways brings to life a hidden network, and tells the story how it forged the London we know today.

About Paul Talling

Paul Talling first became interested in derelict buildings in 2003, after witnessing the demolition of an old candle factory in Battersea. Later that year, he set up derelictlondon.com, a website that collects photos and stories of the capital’s abandoned spots. Since then, the website has received 2 million views, won numerous awards, and been described by the Daily Telegraph as Britain’s ‘shabby Pevsner’. In 2008, Paul published the bestselling first edition of DERELICT LONDON to widespread acclaim.
