Working on his new novel, Anthony is far from pleased when he is summoned for jury service. But it turns out to be an interesting case. He and his co-jurors have been asked to examine a murder.

Lawrence Gascoyne – an unsuccessful sculptor - is accused of killing his mother’s closest friend, Harold Spencer, a respected businessman who, only a few weeks earlier, had suggested cutting Lawrence out of his mother's will.

All the evidence is against Lawrence. The murder weapon (a sculptor’s mallet) was his and he was seen carrying it from his house. There were traces of blood on his clothes and in the sink at his workplace. He had threatened Harold Spencer on the day of the murder.

Guilty or not guilty?

Along with almost everyone in the room, Anthony is certain that Lawrence is guilty as sin. But when one of the jurors is unexpectedly killed, Hawthorne has to step in . And now there are two murders to solve ...
