Many of the Jack Ryan novels work well as standalone thrillers, each focusing on a different international crisis, military conflict or intelligence operation so you definitely can read them in any order. But if you really want to how Jack’s career evolves across the series, taking him from CIA analyst to one of the most powerful figures in American politics, it’s best to read the books in order so you can fully immerse yourself in his world.
Jack Ryan
Tom Clancy's Shadow of the Dragon
President Jack Ryan knows how valuable an asset Liu would be - the inventor is responsible for much of China's recent technological progress, with his latest project rumoured to be the biggest yet. The problem is that none of Ryan's team have any idea where Liu is.
And what's worse, Ryan discovers that China is already watching them closely: a mole, code-named SURVEYOR, has managed to infiltrate US intelligence, with a terrifying level of access.
The new Cold War is about to get very hot indeed . . .
Tom Clancy's Code of Honour
It was a text message that started it. President Jack Ryan's old friend (and former operative) Father Pat West warns of a honey trap, a possible murder and a secret AI project - Calliope - falling into Chinese hands, before going silent.
This leaves Jack Ryan with two pressing problems.
Firstly, find and rescue his old friend, last seen in Indonesia. And secondly, discover what exactly Calliope is and how much of a threat it poses.
But it's not the danger you see that catches you out -
but the one you never see coming . . .
Tom Clancy's Oath of Office
In Iran, protests are growing against the oppressive regime, whipped up by a charismatic student. Most external observers are excited, but on the ground a spy of questionable loyalty senses something is badly amiss.
And meanwhile, with the United States reeling from a string of natural disasters, Russian troops and ships are massing on the borders of the Ukraine, bringing the two powers ever closer to war.
Across the globe a conspiracy is brewing, so darkly brilliant that no-one has yet joined the dots. And the distracted President Ryan has little time to play catch-up: little does he know that he faces a madman with a plan more devastating than he could possibly imagine...
Tom Clancy's Line of Sight
That's until he meets Aida - grown from a child into a beautiful and selfless woman. Jack finds himself drawn to her, not to mention impressed by her dangerous work helping Syrian refugees enter Europe.
But the region is increasingly unstable, and just as Jack lets his guard down, Aida is violently kidnapped by the Serbian mafia.
With no official status, Jack's pleas for help fall on deaf ears, and he realises he must act alone to save the woman he loves. But as the simmering tensions threaten to bubble over, Jack will soon discover Bosnia is a dangerous place to fly solo . . .

Tom Clancy's Power and Empire
In Texas a solitary Highway Patrol trooper stops on a deserted road to find a young Hispanic girl with no identity, a murky history and information to kill for.
In the White House, President Jack Ryan faces his toughest negotiation yet.
Amid a web of coincidences and connections, it soon becomes clear that a series of incidents around the world are connected. And at the centre of the web is a threat as dangerous as anything Jack Ryan has faced before . . .
Tom Clancy's True Faith and Allegiance
A CIA operative travelling on a Canadian passport is intercepted and interrogated at Tehran Airport.
A team of FBI officers are arrested by the Indonesian police for travelling under fake passports in Jakarta.
These apparently unrelated incidents point to a compromise in US government security, and Jack Ryan and his team must find out where it is coming from. From Maryland to Macedonia, they frantically battle shadowy forces who are looking to drag the US president into a ground war with ISIS.
Tom Clancy's Commander-in-Chief
Russia is hurting. It's economy is tanking and its 'adventures' abroad have proved costly. President Volodin knows that his own survival depends on restoring Russian pride.
. . . the world trembles
When a series of explosions, assassinations and attacks rock the global order, only one man in the West recognizes the true cause of the chaos: American President Jack Ryan.
With Russian troops massing on Europe's borders, President Ryan cannot use military might without escalating conflict and playing into Volodin's hands. Instead he turns to his covert intelligence agencies.
They must uncover, infiltrate and neutralize each and every threat. But time is running out. And this war is about to go global . . .
Tom Clancy's Full Force and Effect
There's just one more stage to this perfect plan...the elimination of the president of the United States.
Command Authority
In the present, President Valeri Volodin has risen to power in the Russian republic. But the foundations of his empire are built on a bloody secret from the past, and he'll eliminate anyone who comes close to that truth.
When an old friend of the Ryans is poisoned by a radioactive agent, the trail leads to Russia. And for Jack Ryan, Jr. it's time to finish what his father started . . .
Frequently asked questions
Do you have to read Jack Ryan books in order?
What’s the best Jack Ryan book to start with?
For most readers, we’d suggest starting at the beginning with The Hunt for Red October.
It was the first published Jack Ryan novel and remains one of Tom Clancy’s most iconic books. When a Soviet submarine captain attempts to defect to the West with a state-of-the-art nuclear submarine, CIA analyst Jack Ryan finds himself at the centre of a tense Cold War showdown.
Which book is Jack Ryan season 1 based on?
Amazon Prime Video’s Jack Ryan isn’t a straightforward adaptation of any single Tom Clancy novel.
Instead, the series takes the character of Jack Ryan and places him in a brand-new contemporary storyline created specifically for the series. The first season follows Ryan as he investigates suspicious financial activity linked to a rising terrorist threat, a plot that doesn’t come directly from any of Clancy’s books.
That said, the Prime version of Jack Ryan draws heavily on the character we know from the novels: an intelligent analyst who repeatedly finds himself pulled out from behind a desk and into dangerous situations so you’ll feel well acquainted if you’ve read the series.
Are all of Tom Clancy’s books connected?
Many of them are, yes.
Tom Clancy created what’s often referred to as the “Ryanverse”, a shared world that includes the Jack Ryan novels as well as books featuring characters such as John Clark, Ding Chavez and Jack Ryan Jr. Events and characters frequently cross over between these series, creating one of the most expansive universes in thriller fiction.
However, not every book published under Clancy’s name belongs to that world. Series such as Net Force, Power Plays and some of the later spin-offs sit slightly apart from the core Ryanverse.
If you’re primarily interested in Jack Ryan, you’ll find that the main novels form the backbone of Clancy’s interconnected universe. And once you’ve finished those, there’s a whole network of related books waiting to explore
