1st Doctor Novelisation

Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet

Anneke Wills reads the First Doctor's original encounter with the Cybermen.

Gerry Davis became a BBC story editor in 1965 at the invitation of Head of Serials Donald Wilson, who had been impressed by a course he had written on TV scriptwriting. He had previously been a newspaper reporter, a merchant seaman and a writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and had studied opera and worked as a cinema translator in Italy. His first BBC assignments were on 199 Park Lane and United! and he was then given the chance to take over from Donald Tosh on Doctor Who. Although he never saw entirely eye to eye with producer Innes Lloyd, he remained in this post for over a year before moving on to edit another show, First Lady. He later returned to freelance writing, his greatest success coming in the early Seventies with the BBC's ecological drama Doomwatch, which he co-created with Kit Pedler. From the mid-Seventies he spent most of his time in Hollywood, writing for American films and TV series and teaching screen-writing courses at the UCLA Film School. He died on 31 August 1991, aged sixty-four.

Soon the inhabitants of Mondas arrive at the Snowcap base. But although they used to be just like the humans of Earth, now they are very different. Devoid of emotions, their bodies replaced with plastic and steel, the Cybermen are here!

Humanity needs all the help it can get — but as the Cybermen take over, the Doctor is dying...

Anneke Wills, who played Polly in the BBC TV series, reads Gerry Davis’s novelisation of his and Kit Pedler’s 1966 TV serial, which describes the lead-up to the Doctor’s first ever regeneration.

Doctor Who And The Tomb Of The Cybermen

Michael Kilgarriff reads this gripping novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure, with Cyberman voices by Nicholas Briggs.

Sound plays a great part in this Target Books adaptation of the classic Second Doctor story, with designer Simon Power deliberately trying to evoke a chilling sense of menace which perhaps wasn’t conveyed on screen, building up the claustrophobia and sense of tension... a near-perfect masterpiece of storytelling which in many ways is actually superior to its television counterpart.

The Cybermen - silver, indestructible monsters whose only goal is power - seem to have disappeared from their planet, Telos. When a party of archaeologists, joined by the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria, land on the Cybermen's barren, deserted planet, they uncover what appears to be their tomb. But once inside it becomes clear that the Cybermen are not dead, and some in the group of archaeologists desperately want to re-activate these monsters! How can the Doctor defeat these ruthless, power-seeking humans and the Cybermen? Michael Kilgarriff, who played the Cyber Controller in the original BBC TV serial, reads Gerry Davis' complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1978. Cyberman voices are provided by Nicholas Briggs.

Doctor Who: The Highlanders

Anneke Wills reads this exciting novelisation of a classic Doctor Who novelisation.

History books don't always tell the whole story. Certainly there is no record of an episode that occurred when the Scots, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, were defeated by the English at the battle of Culloden in 1746... And the presence at the time of a blue police box on the Scottish moors seems to have escaped the notice of most eye-witnesses... The Highlanders sets the record straight. And while the incidents described may not be of great interest to historians, for Jamie McCrimmon they mark the beginning of a series of extraordinary adventures. Anneke Wills, who played the Doctor's companion Polly in the original BBC TV serial, reads Gerry Davis's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1984.

The First Doctor encounters a new and terrifying threat - the Cybermen, in a new edition of a Doctor Who classic

Gerry Davis was an experienced television writer when he came to Doctor Who as Script Editor in 1966. Wanting to explore stories rooted more closely in real science, Davis contacted Dr Kit Pedler. The resulting collaboration resulted in several notable Doctor Who scripts, and in particular the creation of the Cybermen. Gerry Davis returned to Doctor Who in 1975 and novelised several of his and Pedler's Doctor Who stories for Target books. Gerry Davis died in 1991.

Christopher ('Kit') Pedler was a medical researcher, and head of the Electron Microscopy Department at the University of London when he was recommended to Script Editor Gerry Davis as someone who might be useful as an adviser to Doctor Who. Davis presented Pedler with hypothetical, fictional problems and asked to extrapolate what would happen, the answer to which formed the basis of Doctor Who stories. Pedler told Davis that as a doctor his greatest phobia was a time when spare part surgery had reached the stage where it was commonplace. There would come a point where it was impossible to tell how much of the original human being remained... From this fear was created the Cybermen. Kit Pedler died in 1981.

Doctor Who and the Cybermen

The Second Doctor's first battle against the Cybermen, in a new edition of a Doctor Who classic

After leaving Doctor Who, Gerry Davis continued to work with Kit Pedler, and together they created the groundbreaking and controversial BBC series Doomwatch. Gerry Davis returned to Doctor Who in 1975 and novelised several of his and Pedler's Doctor Who stories for Target books. Davis spent most of the 1980s working in the USA on film and television projects. He died in 1991.

In 2070, the Earth's weather is controlled from a base on the moon. But when the Doctor and his friends arrive, all is not well. They discover unexplained drops of air pressure, minor problems with the weather control systems, and an outbreak of a mysterious plague.

With Jamie injured, and members of the crew going missing, the Doctor realises that the moonbase is under attack. Some malevolent force is infecting the crew and sabotaging the systems as a prelude to an invasion of Earth. And the Doctor thinks he knows who is behind it: the Cybermen.

This novel is based on 'The Moonbase', a Doctor Who sci-fi story that was originally broadcast from 11 February-4 March 1967.

Doctor Who And The Cybermen

Anneke Wills reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure, with Cyberman voices by Nicholas Briggs.

One by one, their limbs became diseased - they were replaced by plastic and steel! Little by little, their brains tired - computers worked just as well! With metal limbs, they had the strength of ten men. They could live in the airless vacuum of space. They had no heart, no feelings, no emotions, and only one goal - power! In the year 2070, a small blue planet caught their attention. They would land on its satellite and, from there, attack, ransack, destroy and finally abandon...The satellite was the Moon. The helpless planet - Earth. Their names? The Cybermen! Can the Doctor defeat an enemy whose threat is almost as great as that of the mighty Daleks? Anneke Wills, who played the Doctor's companion Polly in the original TV serial The Moonbase, reads Gerry Davis's complete and unabridged novelisation, with specially composed music and special sound.

Doctor Who: The Tomb Of The Cybermen (TV Soundtrack)

Patrick Troughton faces the dreaded Cybermen in the digitally remastered soundtrack of a classic BBC TV story, with linking narration by Frazer Hines.

THE PROGRAMME: The action of The Tomb of the Cybermen follows directly on from that of the preceding serial The Evil of the Daleks, with the Doctor and Jamie welcoming the newly orphaned Victoria aboard the TARDIS. Commissioned as Doctor Who and the Cybermen Planet, this was the third encounter between the Doctor and his half-human, half-machine foes. It was co-written by Kit Pedler, who devised the Cybermen in The Tenth Planet, and Gerry Davis, the story editor who had helped develop them. The serial was also known as The Ice Tombs of Telos during development. The Tomb of the Cybermen was recorded immediately after Victoria's debut story, The Evil of the Daleks, and before the summer break in production. Early scenes on the surface of Telos were filmed at Gerrards Cross Sand & Ballast Company at Wapsey's Wood in Buckinghamshire on 12 June 1967. The serial benefited immensely from some impressive and atmospheric filming for action and effects sequence over the following week at the BBC Television Film Studios at Ealing. Here the full size tomb complex was built for the chilling sequence where the dormant Cybermen return to life. The bulk of the serial was then recorded from 1 to 22 July 1967 in Studio D of the BBC's Lime Grove premises. As with many episodes during this period of Doctor Who's history, The Tomb of the Cybermen did not have a music composer assigned to it. Instead, director Morris Barry worked closely with the sound department to create an atmospheric and evocative background of classic library tracks and Radiophonics, courtesy of Brian Hodgson and Dick Mills. Grams operator Laurie Taylor performed a technical tour-de-force playing this into the studio recordings, with the result that this story is particularly effective on audio. Of the music heard in the story, one particularly distinctive cue is Space Adventure by Martin Slavin, heard as the Cybermen return to life; this had already been associated with the creatures in their two previous appearances. The Tomb of the Cybermen launched the 1967/8 series of Doctor Who, promoted by a striking cover image of the metal menace facing the Doctor on the cover of the Radio Times. The serial was criticised for graphic violence, with Kit Pedler defending his script against concerned parents on the BBC1 feedback programme Talkback on 26 September. Ascribed a legendary status by the fans, the serial was believed lost for many years until a full print of the series was recovered from Hong Kong in 1992 and is currently available on DVD. After the closing credits rolled on Episode 4, BBC1 viewers were shown a short trailer for the next adventure in which two men, camped out on a mountainside, came under a vicious attack. A week later, the Doctor would still be in the cold, encountering The Abominable Snowmen... Programme notes compiled by Andrew Pixley and Mark Ayres.

'You will be like us...' On the planet Telos, the Doctor and his friends encounter a party of archaeologists intent on uncovering the mythical tomb of the Cybermen. Only the Doctor seems aware of the folly of this venture, but suddenly it’s too late - the ice tombs are open and the Cybermen are coming back to life... Trapped underground with the Cyber Controller and his acolytes, including the vermin-like Cybermats, the Doctor and company learn that they are to be turned into a new generation of Cybermen. To make matters worse, there is treachery and double-crossing amongst the humans. Can the Cyber menace be made dormant before it spreads out to the galaxy once again - and will the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria escape with their lives? Frazer Hines, who played Jamie in these four BBC TV episodes from 1967, provides linking narration for the story. In a bonus interview, he also recalls the making of The Tomb of the Cybermen.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Planet (TV Soundtrack)

The Cybermen make their first ever appearance whilst William Hartnell's Doctor nears the end of his first incarnation, in this classic soundtrack adventure with linking narration by Anneke Wills.

'Millions of years ago, there was a twin planet to Earth...' The year is 1986, and at the South Pole the crew of the Snowcap Base have detected a new planet on their radar. The arrival of the Doctor, Ben and Polly at the Base coincides with another landing - that of a spaceship whose humanoid passengers have used cybernetics to replace their limbs and vital organs. The new arrival in the solar system is in fact a tenth planet, and Earth's twin. Its return has brought with it the emotionless Cybermen, their sole aim to ensure the survival of their race. To this end they plan to drain Earth's energy into the dying Mondas, whilst using the human population as fodder for a continuing programme of cyber-conversion. Battling alongside the humans to save their planet, the Doctor appears to weaken and age before the eyes of his companions. An ultimate collapse appears to signal his death - but then... In an exclusive bonus interview, Anneke Wills - who also narrates the story's soundtrack - recalls her memories of making The Tenth Planet.

Doctor Who: The Moonbase (TV Soundtrack)

'There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things... they must be fought.' In 2070 Earth's weather is controlled by the Gravitron, a device based on the Moon and manned by an international team of experts. When the TARDIS deposits the Doctor and his companions on the zero-gravity surface, they discover the base in the grip of a plague epidemic which is drastically reducing the personnel. The Doctor's curiosity is aroused by the mysterious infection. With the base's own medic himself incapacitated, the time traveller offers his services to the ailing crew. Can he pinpoint the source of contamination before time runs out? Jamie, meanwhile, is recovering in the Sick Bay from a blow to the head. In his delirium, can that really be the Phantom Piper come to haunt him - or is it something far more deadly? Soon an invasion force from Mondas descends, its aim to take control of the Gravitron and decimate Earth's population with waves of extreme weather. All remaining humans will be converted to the Cyber race...
