Alex has won the Inspiread 2023 Book Award for his picture book I Did See a Mammoth, the 2020 Shrewsbury Book Fest award and The FCBG 2020 award for his illustrations in The Runaway Pea, as well as being nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal and was a finalist in the 2020 Oscar’s Book Prize. He served in the Royal Navy as a young man, and saw action in the Battle of the Atlantic and other major theatres of war, but his first love of the great days of sail remained unshaken. 
 
Now firmly established as a leading writer of authentic sea stories, he was the author of twenty-eight acclaimed books featuring Richard Bolitho. Under his own name, Douglas Reeman, and in the course of a career spanning forty-five years, he wrote over thirty novels and two non-fiction books. He died in January 2017.

During his life he wrote poetry, novels, plays and was a successful screenwriter. His books were included on the first Nazi blacklist and subsequently burned, but after the end of the Second World War, he again became a vital figure in Austrian cultural life.

In 2019, he won an O Henry Prize for his short story, 'Lagomorph', originally published in Granta, and the first story in Animal Person. MacLeod lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and teaches at Saint Mary's University in Halifax.

Alexander Pope was born on 21st May 1688.He was brought up a Roman Catholic at a time where the laws of England were prejudicial towards Catholics. He suffered tuberculosis as a child and was crippled by it. He never grew taller than 4'6". He first published The Rape of the Lock when he was twenty-three years old in 1712. He later added to it in 1714 and 1717. It was written to reconcile two families who had fallen out over a similar incident where a young Lord Petre had cut off a lock of hair from Arabella Fermor's head. Pope went on to translate the works of Homer and produce The Dunciad and An Essay on Man. Pope died on 30th May 1744.

Spike Milligan

Comic icon Spike Milligan recollects highlights from his stellar career. The comic genius of Spike Milligan changed the face of radio comedy through 'The Goon Show'. Here Milligan chooses and introduces classic clips from his astonishing career: readings from his books 'Puckoon' and 'Adolf Hitler, My Part in his Downfall', poems, songs, sketches, extracts from 'Q6' and 'In the Psychiatrist’s Chair'. He reminisces about India and Bexhill and reads his favourite poems including 'Fred Fernakerpan'. Also included is the complete version of 'The Starlings' - the only 'Goon Show' recorded outside of London and without a studio audience. Plus, of course, there’s a generous helping of 'Goon Show' clips, including 'The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea' and 'The Pevensey Bay Disaster', featuring Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers. Remembering Spike Milligan

First-hand accounts featuring the RAF pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain - one of the chief turning points of World War Two.   'Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few' - Winston Churchill.   The 'Few' were the nearly 3,000 RAF pilots who fought against the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, which raged in the skies over southern England and the English Channel in the summer of 1940.   With a new Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, Britain fought alone in Europe - and under the threat of invasion from Hitler's Germany.   Douglas Bader, Flight Lt Richard Hillary, 'Ginger' Lacey and Flight Lt. Brian Kingcombe describe the strains they had to face as pilots: 'I didn't have butterflies in my stomach - I had vultures' and the 'long, boring hours interspersed with moments of tremendous exhilaration'. Their determination, bravery, and skill are evident as, outnumbered, they fought doggedly in their superior Hurricanes and Spitfires.   With news bulletins, reportage, personal accounts from the ground crews, and excerpts from Churchill's famous speeches, this recording undeniably shows why, for the victorious RAF pilots, 'This was their finest hour'.
